popcorn wishes and binturong dreams

binturong.jpg

At least I didn’t call it “bintuRIGHT”! If you are a fan of Kratts’ Creatures (which, obviously, you are), you already know that binturongs smell like popcorn, have prehensile tails, and totally rock. What you might not know is that some people call them bearcats. Might the gentle binturong have been David Wilcox’s muse? I could go on about my theories relating popcorn and reefer-induced riverboat fantasies, but I wouldn’t want to alienate my non-Canadian readers. So, yeah, popcorn… that’s enough to make me wanna get a bearcat of my own… oh, sorry.

murder in the backyard

murderthumb1rgb.jpg

The day I drew this picture, there were at least a dozen crows in our backyard. They were strutting around, scaring off the squirrels, and just generally being intimidating. Doodle has been trying to say “crow” all week, I think. It sounds suspiciously like his words for “car” and “cookie,” though, so I’m not sure if he’s really trying to say “crow,” or if the crows have gotten to him and are using him in an attempt to procure treats and transportation.

aw, nuts!

squirrelwithbackground.jpg

I know, dumb name. Amy Poehler has some SNL character who says that and I can’t get it out of my head. Those of you who have visted my new Etsy shop, or those of you visiting from it (hi!) will recognise this squirrel. He was actually a super quick sketch that I did when I first got my new tablet last year. I came across him recently and thought he was funny, so I gave him a background and something to live for. Doodle and I have been doing a lot of squirrel watching lately (a fascination we inherited from my dad). Mostly, we admire the acrobatic prowess displayed in their attempts to completely empty our bird feeder every day. Those guys are nuts.

aye aye phone home

etayeaye_blog.jpg

I drew this aye aye for my husband, who is unusually freaked out by them.  You know, I get it – they have freakishly long fingers that could easily pick out your brain from whatever orifice seems appealing.  But it’s that kind of superstitious prejudice (you know, against long-fingered freaks) that has put aye ayes on the endangered species list.  Let’s just accept their fingers for the extremely well-evolved grub grabbing devices that they are, people.

In other, non aye aye related, news, this has been an eventful week at Doodle and Hoob.  First of all, my URL is now doodleandhoob.com (short and sweet).  Also, I opened my very own Etsy shop today AND have made my very first sale (thanks, Lucy!)!!!  So, yeah, check it out under the shop tab if you’re interested.  Etsy offers a nifty little widget for blogs, etc., but WordPress doesn’t allow it (boo), so all you get is a hot screenshot.  You’ll recognize our friend abe abe (the aye aye, duh) in my new banner.

what defines a weed?

condolences_web.jpg

Okay, so I know the answer to that question, but I like dandelions and have never understood why people are so desperate to get them out of their lawns. Anyway, I found myself in need of a condolences card this week, and came up with this drawing for it. The giant hedgehog was trying his best to make an appearance, but I told him that I didn’t think he was a particularly consoling figure, despite his benignity. Blowing on a dandelion clock, on the other hand, can pretty much soothe any pain.

meanwhile, in suite 236…

meanwhile1.jpg

You just know that armadillos can do wicked backspins. This drawing is kind of a sequel to the HoJo hoedown. It, too, started out as a sketch in my lecture notes. In fact, I had to (digitally) white out some handwriting and the lines from the paper. I coloured this on my laptop and saw nice, mellow colours, but am now looking at it on another monitor and find the colours to be rather garish. I wonder what everyone else sees.

a puffy rat-dog is still a rat-dog

spike.jpg

I have long recognised and preached the essential dogginess, and, therefore, awesomeness, of all dogs (other than scary breeds, but that’s another story). This does not change the fact, however, that some dogs have the misfortune of having been born ratesque. And then their owners do things like dress them up and give them condescending and/or ironic names, furthering their plight. Poor things.

hoedown at the hojo’s

gonna-dance-copy.jpg

This drawing started out as a quick sketch in my lecture notes (bad student).  I end up thinking about dogs a lot when my mind wanders (did I mention… bad student?).  After I finished it, the background colours reminded me of Howard Johnson’s.  By the time I remembered that HoJo’s is orange and blue, the name had already stuck.
