happy poisson d’avril!
I get excited every year as April Fool’s Day approaches. I’m not sure why, though, since I’ve never really fooled anyone, been the fool, or even been witness to an exceptionally great fooling. Still, when noon rolls around each April 1st, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed, like an opportunity has been lost. Maybe Doodle and I will fold up a bunch of paper fish and stick them on some unsuspecting backs this Tuesday morning. “Hi, Landlord! Here’s your rent cheque and… Oooh! Poisson’d!” This is my year, folks! Updates on Wednesday.
Oh yeah, and for all you medievalists and (early) early modernists – happy new year!
Update: check out my fishy etsy treasury!

treasure island
This post is going up a little late tonight because, well, that’s a lot of houses. This drawing kind of came out of nowhere, but now that I think about it (because, you know, I have to write about something), it actually incorporates lots of things that I think are kind of cool. Islands, of all sorts, are pretty neat. I once watched a gang of eight year olds examine a dead bird for about an hour on one of these suburban islands. Maps, obviously, are cool, especially the treasure kind. Now that it is getting warmer and Doodle and I are looking forward to spending our days walking around in the woods, I think we might have to take up letterboxing. There are tons of boxes near us, and Doodle loves nothing more than finding stuff hidden in other stuff. The trick will be getting him to put the boxes back.

party on procession hill
You might think that my weekly drawing quota would be filled by my completion of two D&H posts. But you would be forgetting that my life is ruled by a toddler dictator and I don’t always get to choose what I do in my “free” time. Doodle’s favourite indoor pastime is drawing. He has lines down pat, and even some scribbles, but still has to commission all of his other drawings from me. Since Doodle’s vocabulary is very limited, I spend my days drawing balls and cars and more balls and more cars. I figured I might as well incorporate some cars into a D&H drawing after getting so much practice.
Coming soon… explosion at the ball factory! (Not really… unless I get desperate.)

… takes many forms
It’s a D&H twofer! The title would make more sense if I hadn’t included that AT post yesterday, so you can just pretend that these rat posts are nice and continuous. As promised, here’s Rat-Man! And, as an extra bonus – Lab Rat! (get it?) I’m just now noticing that Lab Rat’s tail is not long enough (again, not so up on my rats). I’ve been into labyrinths, though, for years. This, here, would be your basic left-handed seven circuit classical labyrinth, accompanied by your basic first level Pac-Man screen. If you don’t believe that enlightenment can be attained through old school video games, you haven’t seen The King of Kong: Fist Full of Quarters.

Thanks, AT:SF!
After getting several new etsy orders yesterday, I knew something out of the ordinary was going on. Then a few buyers told me that they had found me on Apartment Therapy! This is a great designy blog that I like to visit when daydreaming about the day we actually own a house and can do whatever we want to it.
Here’s what they said about my print. Click on one of the pictures and follow the link to the post. So, thanks, AT:SF, and a special welcome to anyone visiting D&H from there!

the path to enlightenment
I’ve never paid that much attention to rats before, but now I find myself stationed in various pet stores for (what feels like) hours on end watching rat exploits. I’m always trying to convince Doodle that chinchillas are where it’s at, but the fact that they’re always sleeping in their little igloos is not helping my case.
When I added the extra little nose and tail to this drawing, I was reminded of the way that Pac-Man ghosts leave on one side of the screen and enter on the other. I immediately regretted not configuring my maze walls in a Pac-Man screen pattern. So, yeah, coming soon…

chock full o’ nuts
me: What should I draw for tomorrow?
husband: Ooh! You should draw a squirrel who has made a boat from a coffee can and a little hand fan!
me: …
husband: Yeah! And he can be, like, bootin’ across a pond!
me: …
Needless to say, I didn’t come up with anything better.

hammonasset beach
One of the best things about our recent move to New England is that we have local access to the ocean. (Apparently, you’re not really supposed to call the Long Island Sound the ocean, but it fulfills my ocean expectations, so I’m happy.) Doodle and I have been taking advantage of this, and will spend hours walking the boardwalk, chasing seagulls, finding cool rocks/seaglass, poking at jellyfish, digging in the cold sand, and running away from the waves. The beaches here have an interesting combination of sand and smooth stones. Doodle loves to find a nice stoney section and stand on the rocks right where the water comes in around them, but not over them. Then he’ll throw stones into the water until I finally drag him away crying. It’s very hard for me to later explain to him that he can’t throw the stones that we brought home in the house. Because we moved here last fall, we have only come to know and love the off-season beach. I have a feeling that an afternoon at the beach won’t be quite as relaxing come summertime!
