after the pool party

Pool partaaaaay!  I haven’t been to a pool party in… almost three years (but it was a really good one), but I did get to swim in a pool yesterday for the first time in… almost three years, not counting toddler swimming lessons at the Y, which sooo do not count.  I would have rather been in the lake, but I’ll take what I can get, and, quite honestly, it’s been many, many years since I’ve gotten up the nerve to jump in on May two-four (one of my very favourite holidays*).  Today is Memorial Day in the States, which is, understandably, just not quite as festive.  I’m pretty sure that my neighbour drank at least a two-four, though.

I didn’t actually intend to give this pool a face when I started this drawing.  Now I feel kind of bad that its so sad.  Maybe I need to do a little cut->reverse image->rotate 90 degrees clockwise->paste on his mouth.

* I included this Urban Dictionary link to aid those readers who might not be familiar with the institution that is the May two-four.  I do have to take issue, though, with the use of the word “camp” in the entry for “cottage.”  Who says that?

tri-state trekin’

I’m pretty sure that the subtitle of this one is “look ma, no fins!” Okay, so I know this drawing is kind of weird. I bet you didn’t know that beavers and whales were so tight. Here’s the deal: this summer, my husband will be riding the three day, 270 mile (435 km) Tri-State Trek from Boston to NYC in support of ALS/Lou Gehrig’s research. So, for this drawing, I had the brilliant idea of having the three state animals riding the Trek. Was I dissuaded when I discovered that CT’s and MA’s state animals are the sperm whale and the right whale, respectively? Apparently not.

P.S. All funds raised by the Trek go directly to the institute in MA dedicated to stopping ALS. If you’d like to support the institute and help my husband reach his fund raising goal, here is his personal donation site.

thankful chipmunk

I’ve been a little under the weather since returning from my (highly entertaining) conference a couple of days ago. So, here’s my low-effort drawing for this week. It is, obviously, a counterpart to my chipmunk balloon card of a few weeks ago. I’m pretty much the worst ever at sending thank you cards. I figure I might be slightly more inclined to be a more gracious/appropriate/less jerky friend/relative if I had some thank you cards hanging around, and even more so if those I had hanging around were adorned with a shy chipmunk.

My family had a pet chipmunk for several years while I was growing up. His name was… wait for it… Alvin. Alvin was hit by a mouse trap at our cottage and was in a coma when we found him. My brother nursed him back to health, but it was pretty obvious that he would not do very well back in the woods (as evidenced by the fact that he begged for food from our dog). So, he ran around our house instead. Alvin ended up having a long and eventful life. Gee… now I’m all nostalgic. RIP, Alvin.

segway tour

Woodland creatures? Check. Segways? Check. Okay, it looks like I have my coolness quotient filled for today.

This drawing was influenced by two separate experiences that my husband had (sometimes you have to live vicariously when you have a toddler). A few months ago, he saw a Yalie bootin’ around campus on his Segway, protecting himself from the rain with a big umbrella. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen someone using a Segway for personal, rather than tour-related, use (other than Gob, obviously). Then, just today, my husband rode in the 42 mile Five Boro Bike Tour along with 29,999 others through the traffic-free streets of NYC. I couldn’t really fit 30,000 woodland creatures on Segways in my drawing, but that would be cool. I’m pretty sure no one would want to be behind the skunk, though.

I’ll be out of town for a conference next weekend, so, unless I’m really on top of my game, which I won’t be, my next post will be a couple of days late. I figured I’d give fair warning so that all the D&H fans out there don’t spontaneously riot or something.
